Back to the Future Part II Predictions

Posted on September 12, 2008 by Jonathan Carr |

In 1989, we were all treated to what Hollywood (specifically writers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale along with executive producer Steven Spielberg) envisioned as the near future.  Back to the Future Part II (1989) made a few predictions which can only make us wonder as we approach the year 2015.  Spielberg along with George Lucas have been known to make crazy predictions such as the ION engine found in a Tie Fighter as seen in the Star Wars Trilogy.  Star Trek people will argue it came from their end of the nerdiverse, but whatever!  Look at the cloning in Jurassic Park and how today’s medicine is heading towards such technology.

Take the jacket in the above picture from BTTFMOVIE.COM.  This is the jacket that Marty McFly’s son wore in the future.  Doc gave Marty a similar one so that Marty could replicate his son.  Anyway, this jacket has an auto-fit function which is nice.  It also has an auto-dry function just in case you fall into a body of water because your hoverboard has lost its power.  I also have to make reference to the cool digital voice that talks when you use its functions. The closest thing I saw that replicates this technology was a jacket at NextFest but it didn’t dry your hair in 5 seconds.  So what do you think?  Will we have a jacket like the one Marty wore by 2015?

The above sneakers (image from NYMAG which appear to be from the brand Nike feature an auto-lace setting which fits snug on your foot.  We have seen Nike Air and Reebok Pump technology, but nothing close to the shoes in the movie yet.  If you ask me, such a feature would contribute to laziness and add to the obesity problem in the US.  I think is cool though and I would probably wear them.

The hoverboard (also seen in above image) is something we will probably never see on a consumer market.  Why?  It is simply too dangerous.  There have been attempts with air cushions and magnets, but we are still waiting for such a technology to safely hit the streets.

Ahh, holographic technology…my favorite!  Since Spielberg was involved, it was easy to feature this clip in the movie.  Back to the Future Part II (1989) came out just a few years after the last movie in the Jaws series, Jaws: The Revenge (1987).  It is safe to say that this prediction was a false one considering we would have to see 15 Jaws sequels in the next 6 years.  Notice who the movie was directed by on the left side of the movie title in the picture?  It was great to see Marty crap his pants though!  (image from Rollanet)

The above image from It Is Green Man is of a food hydrator. Now this would be a great way to save space when storing food.  The pizza seen above started out as something the size of a lemon slice and hydrated into a full size pizza.  We still have 6 years to go for this so who knows if it is possible.  What do you think?

Last but not least, I would like to talk about the Pepsi Perfect (image from Ketzer).  I still can’t figure out how this thing opens but one thing is for sure, Pepsi is still around and it is not going anywhere.  In 2015, there might be a Pepsi drink that looks like this, but will it be called perfect?  Maybe the Pepsi Perfect will finally be a healthy soda that tastes exactly like the unhealthy Pepsi that dominated the last 3 decades making “Perfect” the appropriate name.  Who knows!

In summary, all of these technologies are realistic, except for Jaws 19.  Like I said, we still have 6 years and the hype will certainly come as we get closer to 2015 as to whether the writers and producers of Back to the Future Part II (1989) were right!

Our lives are repetitious shams–every single day a simulacrum of the previous day. So for Man, he is out to pepper his daily activities with different things–he’s fighting against boredom. Matthew Lotti
