Doggie Howser of the Vet World?

Today I came across a featured Yahoo.com video that shames my degree lacking life! It seems that in Washington state, Courtney Oliver just completed her college coursework. She now holds an online certification as a veterinary assistant. It took her just eight months. Why is this so amazing? Courtney is only ten years old!

As if she’s nothing special, Courtney says its just what she has always wanted to do. “I have a dog, Maggie, and two hamsters and I just thought: ‘Well, if I have so many animals why not just work with them?’”

At South Bay Veterinarian hospital in Olympia, Dr. Michelle Shoemaker is Courtney’s mentor and has helped her through everything, even her initial fear of blood. To the other veterinarian assistants surprise, Courtney is quizzed quite often at the hospital and “always know the answers”. Dr. Shoemaker says Courtney has always been a very bright, “Amazing girl”.

Despite her new college degree and apparent qualifications, Courtney must be accompanied by her mother at the hospital. The law says she too young. Because of her age, she was also denied admission to her local 4-H, a job training veterinary program. But, it’s no mind to Courtney who’s concern is tending to her patients. She volunteers at Dr. Shoemaker’s hospital once every week.

“Dr. Shoemaker and I are like twins.” Courtney says. “We just love animals. We just wanted to do this because this is our thing.”

How amazing to even know her “thing” at ten years old. Now excuse me while I look up applications to online universities.

Wow, I am almost 30 and I still do not what I want to do in life. I wonder what her retirement fund would look like at 60 years old if she started an IRA or 401k right now..lol.

    Good for her!

Bravo for her. I have a very deep trust in the idea that what you love to do you will do well and that the instinctive process also works well. I believe the old fashioned work ethic contributes the most to the success radio. I also know that what you love to do and do well contributes to your overall satisfaction and happiness as much as the effects of the contributions be they educational, emotional, etc. It is sort of like the old adage about giving or taking being the best.

I tell my students to write about what they know and know about what they write and it will work.

As to knowing what you want at a certain age, I asked for a blackboard @ four and started teaching 38 years ago. I love every single minute of each class and I think part of my happiness is that I really do want to be there. I started student teaching @ about 19 and although I do have days when getting up @ 6:00am or earlier and going to bed while falling asleep grading those essays gets old. But the joy of each time some student “gets it” just can’t be resisted.

I also have always been able to exercise my creative side as a drama coach, Literary Art Magazine advisor, Yearbook advisor, etc. I was my school’s first Adult School Cordinator and was Spokesperson of the HS Parent Organization. I did the newsletter, and still co-host the TV program.

You may wonder if I am a little A-personality, crazy, motivated, and coffee adicted. I am all but it is because I love life and was blessed to know early what I wanted and enjoy, even now, what I love. I just need more time to enjoy all this.

For those out there looking for the eureka of happiness just think about who you are, what you do, what you need and want to do next and the rest follows.
