Charlie Wilson’s War
Posted on January 15, 2008 by Katherine Carr |
Over the recent holiday movie selections I viewed Charlie Wilson’s War and was educated from the script about the influence this congressman from Texas had on the Russian “Vietnam” engagement. Because I do not truly know how much of this is fact and what is fiction nor do I actually know the validity and truth in the story, it is somewhat difficult to use a critique as a balance and as a commentary. I will, however, encourage all those who are interested in how we came to be in the middle east, how we fought communism, and how history is told to see this somewhat factual account and judge for themselves.
As one who has a tiny actual piece of the Berlin Wall that was given to me by a student serving in the military at the time, I am fascinated with the history behind the eventual fall of the curse of the modern world. If, indeed, a few individuals can be credited to some extent for the demise of Russia and the freedom of innocents I say “bravo”. If evil took over the cause and turned it into a race against our very survival we have to use that information to learn from history and prevent the future from the kind of misuse of power and greed imagined and now actualized. I love Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and was, to be truthful, distracted by their star power. I also saw Forest Gump too many times so could have confused the movie with world events.
I would like to research this more and get back to you. It is a good commentary on what goes on in this country and world and how important it is those we help know we have and why. As a child of the 50s and the ever looming threat of communism around the corner, it is wonderful that someone and something reversed all that was first there. If we helped people and they never knew it was us, it is a shame and should be corrected. I have faith that good people will listen and goodness will prevail. The starting point can come from any stimulus….why not a movie?
