when it rains…it pours

When I went outside to check the status of the remains of the hurricane creeping up the east coast the dark fog engulfed my spirit and I thought of that old saying ” when it rains it pours “. I started to think how appropriate that is to life in general. How many of us go through circumstances beyond our control and just when it starts to “ease up” another cloud descends, opens up, and darkens our mood even more. It makes us wonder if the sun will ever shine again. It also seems like the clouds, once spotted, linger and come in sets, just like the waves on the Atlantic approaching in threes. Although that is a surfer’s dream, it is not for me. It also would seem that threes are very selective be it deaths, taxes, bills, illness and/or stress. One of the ways I have learned to cope with the rain is to remember some words from my son when he was about nine. Jonathan said “to have the rainbow and flowers you first have to have the rain”. I do not know where he got it or heard that from but it has completely changed my perspective. When the darkness descends and threatens to consume my thoughts I think of the rainbow to come and the sweet smell of flowers in my garden, so appreciative of the rain and moisture. It also helps to know the rain does stop even if it pours first and life is hope and hope is faith. Thanks to a young mind and a positive heart’s lesson I now say …bring it on.
